A contemporary dance performance based on the book with the same title and written by Jessie Oliveros.
The Remember Balloons tells the story of James, whose grandfather has "balloons" that are filled with wonderful memories. When his grandfather starts to lose his balloons, James does his best to retrieve them. As his grandfather ultimately loses all of his balloons, James realizes the best way to keep his grandfather's memories alive is by re-sharing his stories.
The story also aims to help children, adults, and caregivers process the changes they see in a loved one who is suffering from Alzheimers's.
Manship Theatre is thrilled to be partnering with Dominic Moore-Dunson, a contemporary choreographer from Akron, Ohio, who is workshopping this performance/book adaptation in multiple cities throughout the United States. For Dominic, building community is central to his artistic practice. Through The Remember Balloons, Dominic hopes "to engage families within their communities to emphasize the importance of preserving memories and sharing stories across generations."
There will be a networking opportunity in the Jones Walker Foyer beginning at 5pm with a cash bar available for refreshments, followed by the performance at 6pm. After the performance, Dominic will lead a Q & A discussion with the audience.
This is a non-ticketed performance with suggested donations at the door.
Please carefully consider whether a performance is appropriate for children before planning to attend.
