Emmett Till, like The Great Migration and The Mississippi Blues, has created an inextricable and enduring connection between Chicago and the state of Mississippi. Please join Opera Southern, founded in 2017 by faculty Southern University and A&M College, as we breathe new life into this iconic story through the lush operatic setting of composer, Charles Lloyd, Jr.
Mr. Lloyd is a renown composer on the faculty of Southern University. He has commissioned and written songs for super stars Kathleen Battle and Jessye Norman which were performed at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Metropolitan Opera conductor, James Levine.
Musically, the opera reflects the amalgamation of Mr. Lloyd’s love for Negro spirituals and gospel, as sung in Mississippi Delta during the 1950’s as well as the bel canto style of 19th century Italy.
All patrons, regardless of age, must have a ticket to attend performances. Please carefully consider whether a performance is appropriate for children before planning to attend.
