Two-time Grammy winner and blues legend, Taj Mahal

Known as one of the most prominent and influential figures in blues and roots music, Taj Mahal has marked his four decade long career with 30 albums, two Grammy wins and a Blues Hall of Fame induction. Although Mahal began his career with American blues, he has since become known as one of the first artists to introduce world music to popular sounds. By combining sounds from West African, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and the Hawaiian Islands, Taj Mahal has created a unique sound that included music from almost every corner of the world.

Born in Harlem as Henry St. Claire Fredericks, Mahal grew up in Springfield, Mass. where he learned to play the piano, clarinet, trombone and harmonica at a very young age. Since then, Mahal has learned to play over 20 instruments and has rubbed elbows with many other blues legends including Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Sleepy John Estes.

WordCrew is a spoken word poetry writing and performance workshop for youth ages 13-19. WordCrew is also the only youth spoken word collective in Baton Rouge. This summer interested participants will learn the writing, performance and culture of spoken word poetry under the tutelage of nationally acclaimed slam poets, Chancelier 'xero' Skidmore and Donney Rose, who have a combined 18 years of teaching experience.

The summer session of WordCrew will be held from June 3rd-28th. Workshops will take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6-8pm. The cost is $100.00 per student. For more information, emailforwardartsbr@gmail.com.
